"Bettie" Scott
Mary Elizabeth "Bettie" Scott, musician, vocalist and music teacher, passed away on January 2, 2013 at Cokesbury Village in Hockessin at age 86. With a deep, lifelong love of music, Bettie studied, sang, performed and taught music both locally and abroad during her lifetime.
Born in Vineland, NJ, Bettie graduated in the class of '44 from Vineland High School. Immediately after WWII, her father was stationed in Austria where she spent 3 years with her parents and earned a Certificate of Merit from the Academy of Music in Vienna. She returned home and completed her Bachelor of Music degree at Westminster College in Princeton NJ in 1949. In 1963, she earned a Masters in Music Education from Temple University in Philadelphia.
An accomplished and versatile musician, she worked as a vocal teacher and was a high school chorus instructor for a while. As a Mezzo Soprano soloist, she performed with the Saginaw Choral Society in MI, New Brunswick Summer Theater in ME, Temple University Concert Choir in PA, Mendelssohn Club in PA, Philadelphia Chamber Orchestra in PA, Delaware Valley Chorus in DE and the Grace United Methodist Church in DE.
Bettie Scott's musical talents lead her to the Wilmington area where she was Director of Music at Lower Brandywine Presbyterian Church for 20 years. She was Director of Choral Music at St. Paul's United Methodist Church and was the Founder/Director of "The Joy Singers". An accomplished Hammer Dulcimer player, she also taught and performed extensively in the Delaware area. She shared her love of music with her late husband as they performed together in their duo "Singing Strings". She also was a well respected member of the "Brandywine Dulcimer Fellowship" where she was also editor of their newsletters.
Mrs. Scott was predeceased by her husband, Rev. Robert F. Scott and is survived by her son Doke T. Scott of Newark, DE; son Matthew P. Scott of Asheville, NC; nephew Henry T. Fisher II of Kennett Square, PA; niece Lee Anne Fisher Beasley of Point Cook, Australia; nephews Mark Fisher of Las Vegas, NV and Douglas Fisher of Worthington, OH.
Memorial services will be held at 2 pm this Friday, January 18 in the Chapel at Cokesbury Village with a reception to follow in the Lower Atrium. Private interment was held at Lower Brandywine Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
