Aubrey Dean Hoggatt went to his reward at 8:15 am on January 15, 2013 at Parkview Hospital in LaGrange. He was born on August 11, 1926 in Herbst, IN, to Wilbur "Dutch" and Esta (Sprinkle) Hoggatt.

Dean's family worshipped with the church of Christ in Normal IN, where he was baptized in the backyard pond when he was 14 years old.

Dean attended Swayzee High School, Purdue University, and Goshen College. As a young man, Dean's activities included flying and singing. He sang in a quartet in High School and at Purdue. He also sang with the Ball Band Male Chorus, while he worked at Ball Band. He especially enjoyed singing with his family, and often led songs at church events.

After graduating from High School, Dean worked at Peerless of America in Marion, IN, as a Receiving Checker. In 1945, Dean enlisted for the U.S. Army in Indianapolis, IN, and was sent to Biloxi, MS for training. He served as PFC in World War II as Guard Patrolman, and assigned pilots and crew members for training flights in Las Vegas, NV. He quickly associated with the church wherever he went, allowing him to feel "right at home." Everywhere Dean went, Christians were his family. When Christians moved from LaGrange, he always encouraged them to quickly find God's people where they moved and continue serving Him there.

While at Purdue, Dean began his 61-year marriage to Thelma Mae Campbell. They were married on March 12, 1949 in Lafayette, IN by their friend Paul Himes. They moved for a short time to Springfield, OH, where Dean was employed by a pharmacy. Then they moved to Mishawaka, IN, where Dean worked at Ball Band.

In 1953, Dean and Thelma moved to LaGrange, IN, where Dean owned and operated Metal Craft Products. He also worked on construction of the Indiana Toll Road. Dean built several houses around LaGrange, as well as the LaGrange Motel, which they operated until 1973. Dean obtained his Realtor license, working at Schrock Real Estate and Home Sales Real Estate, which he owned.

In June 1953, they began meeting with other Christians in LaGrange County as the LaGrange church of Christ. Dean loved the church, and led the LaGrange congregation at various times in education, facilities, worship, benevolence, evangelism, finances, missions, and local outreach. He worked on the bus ministry to bring area children for Bible study and to reach their families with the Gospel. He also worked with Norm Herron to organize Keenagers, a weekly Bible study and fellowship program for local senior citizens, which continued for 17 years. In 1996, Dean and Thelma spent three months in Nigeria, where Dean oversaw the construction of the Mfon Abasi Orphanage. The Orphanage employs widows in the care of 35 orphan children.

In 1957, Dean was a charter board member for Camp Indogan, a Christian youth camp in Angola IN, which he served for over 50 years. Dean also served 10 years as a Trustee for Rochester College (formerly Michigan Christian College) in Rochester Hills, MI.

Dean's wife Thelma preceded him in death on August 14, 2010 in LaGrange. He was also preceded in death by his parents, sisters Beulah, Cathelene, and Geraldine Cardwell, and brothers Charles, Merle, James, and George Hoggatt.

Surviving him are his children Kathy, Kent, Lesly, Jean, and Brian. He is also survived by his sister Julia Gould. He had ten grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Dean's loving Christian example will continue to positively influence the church and the lives of his family and friends.
