Richard HOEY Sr. - the family patriarch, born in Brannockstown Cross, Trim Parish, County Meath, Ireland, (some 20 miles southwest of Dublin); brought the family to Boston in the first year of Great potato famine. Richard's sister, Mary Hoey DOLAN, lived in Abington. The death records of both siblings list "John and Mary" as their parents.
The Hoeys found employment in New England's shoe mills and settled in Natick and in Webster. Throughout the 1850s the children had educational advantages their parents never had and started large families of their own. Ultimately Richard and Ann HOEY had 69 known grandchildren.

1861-1865: The Civil War. All eight HOEY sons as well as the first two grandsons enlist in the armed forces. Several are wounded and captured; the eldest and youngest, John and Lawrence, both die in Confederate prison camps in 1865.
