Methodist Head In Clovis Dies

CLOVIS (AP) - Dr. H.H. Allen, superintendent of the Clovis district of the Methodist Church, died Friday afternoon at his home after a short illness.

Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at First Methodist Church in Clovis, and burial will follow in Clovis.

Dr. Allen was a former superintendent of the Methodist Home at Tallequah, Okla., a one-time head of the Sacramento Assembly in the mountains near Alamogordo, and conference treasurer of the New Mexico Conference.

He was pastor of Grave [sic] Methodist Church in Alamogordo from 1951-55, and also at one time served First Methodist Church of El Paso.

Surviving are his widow and a son, Gomerray Allen of Alamogordo.

Former Pastor Dies At Clovis

Funeral services will be held in Clovis Monday afternoon for Dr. H.H. Allen, former pastor of Grace Methodist Church here and a longtime leader in his denomination, who passed away at 1:30 p.m. Friday in Clovis after a brief serious illness.

Dr. Allen, who served as pastor here from 1951 until 1955 and who later headed the Sacramento Assembly, was widely known and respected in this area. He was the father of Gomerray Allen, of Alamogordo, who has served as director of music for Grace Church for the past several years.

Last rites for Dr. Allen, who at the time of his death was serving as district superintendent of the Clovis District of the Methodist Church - one of the highest offices of the church short of the bishop's position - will be held at the First Methodist Church of Clovis at 2 p.m. Monday.

Local members of Grace Church have begun a memorial fund, with members of the congregation and others interested invited to make contributions to Albert Miller or at the church office.

Dr. Allen, who made hi home at 1901 Gidding in Clovis, was a former superintendent of the Methodist Home at Tallequah, Okla., a former treasurer of the New Mexico Conference, and had held many other posts of high responsibility in the church in New Mexico and Oklahoma. Among others, he had served as pastor of the First Methodist Church of El Paso.

He received the honorary doctor of divinity degree within recent years from McMurry College.

His last public appearance before the congregation of Grace Church came a few months ago when he participated in the dedicatory service of the new Grace Church building.

Immediate survivors include his widow and the son here.
