James was the son of Tipton and Lydia (Carson) Hightower. He married Lucy Wallace on August 21,1898. In the 1900 census, James was 18 and Lucy was 16. They had a child but that child was no longer living in 1900. James and Lucy had another child, a son, Hubert Cecil, the year before James was killed in the Fraterville Mine Explosion May 19, 1902. James had just turned 20 in April. Our family still remembers this horrific day with great sorrow.
