Mrs. Budlong, Old Resident, Expires Sunday - Long Prominent Here In Temperance and Mission Circles

Mrs. Minnie S. Budlong, widow of the late Hon. John Budlong, and an ardent worker in the interests of foreign missions and temperance here for may years, died at her home, 1519 Broadway, at 2:40 o'clock Sunday afternoon. She had been in failing health For some time and seriously ill for the last six weeks.

Mrs. Budlong had been a resident of Rockford since 1869, when she and her husband came here from Watertown, N.Y., where Mr. Budlong had be3en editor of the Northern New York Journal. They settled on a 180-acre farm, part of which is now the Broadway business district. The family has occupied the same residence, built in 1831, ever since, except for short interruptions.

Mrs. Budlong was born August 7, 1840, in Lorraine, New York. She was the daughter of Philander and Adeline M. Smith, founders of Philander Smith college and Adeline Smith Home in Little Rock, Ark. She graduated from Casenovia seminary and was married Jun 14, 1865.

Outside of her home interests, Mrs. Budlong's life devotion was given to the cause of foreign missions to which she and her parents were most generous contributors. She was actively identified with the work of the Women's Foreign Missionary society of the Methodist Episcopal church rom the time of its organization in 1869 and was a charter member of the first auxiliary organized west of the Alleghany mountains in what is not Centennial M. E. church.

She became the first corresponding secretary of Rockford district woman's foreign missionary society and magazine articles to the work.

Mr. and Mrs. Budlong were first members of the Old third Street M.E. church of Rockford, and later for 30 years. Mrs. Budlong was a member of the Centenial M.E. church. At the time of her death she held membership in the Broadway M.E. church which is located on the northwest corner of the Budlong residence lot. She was also a member of the Central W.C.T.U.

Mrs. Budlong is survived by two sons, Standish S. Budlong and Winthrop M. Budlong, and one daughter, Miss Mary A. Budlong, all of Rockford. Two grandchildren, Mertimer Cook Budlong, LaSalle and Barbara S. Budlong, Rockford also survive.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Broadway M.E. church. The Rev. John O. Hovgard will officiate and interment will be in Cedar Bluff cemetery.
