James Pierce Howell was the son of James Marion and Harriett Clementine (Scoggins) Howell.

In 1898 Pierce married Rithma Gene Anderson, the daughter of Andrew Jackson and Ellen (Hibberts) Anderson. The couple made their home in the Fulton County portion of Atlanta.

Pierce worked for the railroad. By 1910 he was Chief Clerk; in 1920, Train Master; and in 1930, Superintendent of Transportation. The work took the family first to Macon, Georgia, and then to St. Louis, Missouri.

While living in Macon, WWI broke out. Pierce registered for the draft on September 12, 1918. He was described as a man of medium height and build, with blue eyes and light hair. The family was living at 252 Orange, Macon, Bibb County, Georgia, at the time.

Over the years, the couple had two children: Perry L Howell and Dana Ruth Howell (Mrs. Earl Crawford Wagner).

On August 17, 1934, Pierce went to be with the Lord. He chose to be buried in the family cemetery near Mableton.
