Walter Phelps was born in Nov. 3, 1639 in Westbury, Wiltshire, England where he was baptized. Somerset and Wiltshire are close, and his dad was born in Somerset, England. He was the son of Walter Phelps (1614-1640) and Rebecca Phelps. Walter married Elizabeth in England. Many people on ancestry say her last name was "Benson". Many times there is a family Bible or other information, but at this time, we're not sure of her last name.

Walter and Elizabeth had 8 known children: Walter Phelps (1680-1780), William Phelps (1682-1748), John Phelps (1684-1725), Elizabeth Phelps (1693-1703), George Phelps (1694-), Benjamin Phelps (1695-1698), Joseph Phelps (1698-1698)and Charles Phelps (1699-1772).

The one on page 172 lists: Family Members: Wife Phelps, Elizabeth; Mother Phelps, Rebecca. Primary Immigrant: Phelps, Walter. The one on page 360 lists family members: Wife & Mother & 3 persons. Primary Immigrant: Phelps, Walter. The 3rd one for the same year on page 519 just lists Walter Phelps as the primary immigrant. Did this family immigrate in 1680 to Maryland or were they just traveling back and forth from Maryland to England in that year?

The book "MARYLAND RENT ROLLS 1705-1724 BALTIMORE AND ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTIES" shows land that was rented or surveyed in Anne Arundel, Maryland during the 1660's (20 years before these 3 travel documents): Walter Phelps rents 33 acres of Elk Creek on South River (P 159). 16 February 1661 – Walter Phelps rents 100 acres of Covell’s Folly on Flat Creek (P 162). William Phelps owned 62 ½ acres in 1682 (P 166). Bachellor’s Hope…..240 acres surveyed 15 February 1665 for Walter Phelps on the north side of South River on the east side of the creek….Charles Phelps, Owner. (P 206).

Walter Phelps arrived in Maryland, USA in 1680. He was 45 years old at the time. Gust Skordas in his Early Settlers of Maryland recorded thirteen Phelps persons including a Walter Phelps, his wife, Elizabeth, his mother, Rebecca, and three others as emigrating from England to America settling in the area of "Providence" in 1680. Providence later became Anne Arundel County.

From MARYLAND RENT ROLLS 1705-1724 BALTIMORE AND ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTIES, this is the land that Walter owned in Anne Arundel County, Maryland: On 27 February 1684, 83 acres were surveyed and named “Phelps Luck” with Walter Phelps listed as owner (P 174) Phelps’ Choyce owned by Walter Phelps….200 acres surveyed on 12 October 1682. (P 184). Phelps Increase….300 acres surveyed on 20 June 1680 for Walter Phelps on Cypress Swamp by Thomas Reccant. (P 253).
