Putnam Courier, Carmel, NY, Thursday, April 21, 1960: Chester S. Tompkins, a former deputy sheriff and jailer and more recently maintenance foreman of the Putnam County Highway Dept., died at his home on Hill Street, Mahopac Falls, on Tuesday, April 19, 1960, following an illness of several weeks. The deceased was a son of Nathaniel and Susan Sackrider Tompkins and he born at Mahopac Falls, Feb. 8, 1890. He attended the Mahopac Falls district school and was employed by the late E.S. Agor for several years in his feed and coal business at Mahopac Falls. During the administration of Sheriff Curry, Mr. Tompkins served as jailer and deputy. Mr. Tompkins was united in marriage when a young man with the former Mary E. Potter and her death occurred two months ago. Surviving are one sister, Mrs. Horace Lockwood, and two nieces, Mrs. Joan Hyatt and Mrs. Edna Johnson, all of Mahopac Falls. Interment will be made in the family plot at Ballard-Barrett cemetery.
