Ruth Hopkins Whittington, 89, peacefully entered the gates of heaven Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at Wilkinson Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 13, at Wilkinson Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Jimmy Barrett officiating. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. Mrs. Whittington was born June 30, 1923, in Cabarrus County, daughter of the late Charles E. Hopkins and Myrtie Moose Hopkins. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lee Whittington; her sons, Bobby Whittington and an infant, Lee Ray Whittington; two sisters; and four brothers. Ruth retired from Cannon Mills. She was an active member of Poplar Grove Baptist Church, where she was involved with missions, taught Sunday school, made floral arrangements for the church and served on the bereavement committee. She gave so much and asked nothing in return. Ruth was a loving wife and mother who faithfully served her Lord and her family. Survivors include her son, Don Whittington and wife, Kathy, of Mt. Pleasant; daughter-in-law, Janet Goodman Whittington, of Concord; grandchildren, Joey Whittington and wife, Tinky, Lee Whittington, Elizabeth Huneycutt and husband, Dwayne and Katrina Whittington; great-grandson, Doug Whittington; sister, Kathy Mullis, of Punta Gorda, Fla.; nieces, Tonda Mullis, Wanda Fein, Saundra Mullis, Rhonda Scull and Donda Mullis. The family wishes to express their extreme gratitude for the loving care provided by the staff of Hospice and Palliative Care of Cabarrus County, especially Janna Davis, Susan Haigler, Karen Kaser Odor and Kathleen Blackwelder-Plank
