Myrtle Beach - James Madison Gardner Sr., 76, of 31st Avenue North, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at home.

He was born April 27, 1925, in Hartsville, a son of the late Sid Kelly and Loucelle Gwin Gardner.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Myrtle Beach, where he was a former chairman of the official board. He was a graduate of Hartsville High School and Clemson University, where he earned an industrial bachelor's degree. He was head of industrial engineers at AVX Corp. from 1952 to 1956, management of analysis at Myrtle Beach Air Force Base from 1956 to 1972, and owner of the Florentine Motel and Cypress Creek Development Corp. He was an Army veteran and was involved in constructing air strips, bridges and buildings. He was a former president of the Myrtle Beach Jaycees, a member of the Myrtle Beach Rotary Club and a former board member of the Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce. He was a founder, board chairman and 37-year member of the Waccamaw Center for Mental Health.

Survivors include his children and grandchildren, Patsy Alexander and her children, Wiley, Madison and Haley of Myrtle Beach; Cathy Gaither, her husband, Bill, and her children, McMillan, Will and Kristin of Myrtle Beach; Matt Gardner and his wife, Heidi, of Sedona, Ariz.; Gwin McKinnon, her husband, Mike, and her children, Kady, Patrick and Sidney of Myrtle Beach; a brother, Bill Gardner of Ninety Six; and a sister, Jane G. Hunter of Clemson.

He was predeceased by a brother, Sid King Gardner of Camden.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at McMillan-Small Funeral Home.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church. The Revs. John F. Evatt and Thomas N. Brittain will officiate. Burial will be in Ocean Woods Memorial Cemetery
