Rebecca was the ninth of twelve children born to Charles G Hooton, an attorney, and his wife, Ann Taylor. On Dec 9 1862, she married Henry Harrison Duncan, a stationary engineer then employed in Preston County, WV, but the couple soon removed to Henry's home in Cambria County, PA. They were expecting their second child when Henry died in 1865, at age 24. About 1868, she married Henry's youngest brother, James Clarke Duncan, and their first child, Charles, was born in Cambria County. By 1870, the family had moved back to Preston County, and their second child, Margaret Anna, was born there. Following her father's death in 1873, the family moved to Cameron, WV, arriving shortly before the birth of their son, James Frank, in 1874. Two daughters, Nelle Sarah and Edna Evelyn followed, completing the family. Rebecca lived in Cameron until ill health caused her to move to Hundred, Wetzel County, WV, where she lived with her daughter, Margaret Anna and son-in-law, until her death in 1934.
