Dr. Kenneth Bromfield


Dr. Kenneth Raymond Bromfield, 85, of Frederick, died Saturday, Dec. 15, 2007, at the Glade Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, in Walkersville. He was the husband of Mrs. Eleanor Mae Atherholt Bromfield.

Dr. Bromfield was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., on June 22, 1922, he was a son of the late Raymond A. and Pearl Renowden Bromfield.

He was a veteran of World War II having proudly served his country in the Army Air Force. He received his bachelor's degree from Penn State University and his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota. Dr. Bromfield worked for many years as a plant pathologist at Fort Detrick for the Department of the Army and the Department of Agriculture. At one time, he was known as an expert on Oriental Peanut Rust, and traveled worldwide. He was also on the staff at Frederick Community College.

He was a member of over 50 years at the Frederick Presbyterian Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are five children, Linda L. Bromfield and husband, Jack Ottinger, Kenneth G. Bromfield and wife, Christina, Raymond A. Bromfield and wife, Laura, Roy E. Bromfield and wife, Anita and Ellen L. Bromfield, all of Frederick; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Dec. 17 at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Private interment will be in the Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18 from the Frederick Presbyterian Church, 115 W. Second St., Frederick. The Rev. Dr. Eric T. Myers, pastor of the church will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Frederick Presbyterian Church Youth Group, 115 West Second Street, Frederick, MD 21701.
