A former pastor of the Summersville Baptist Church died last week. The Rev. Thurman J. Eaton, 64, of Greensburg Road, Campbellsville, died Friday, May 11,1990 at Norton's Hospital in Louisville. He was the son of the late Will Eaton and Martha Gregory Eaton, and was born Nov. 8, 1925 in Monroe County, Ky. Rev. Eaton was pastor of the Summersville Baptist Church from 1968 to 1974, according to Rev. William Egbert, the present pastor of the church. "He was a real strong pastor here," said Rev. Egbert. "He was well liked and visited with everyone in the community. He was respected by everyone." Egbert said various improvements were made to the church while Rev. Eaton pastored there. Rev. Eaton, who was retired, was a member of the Elkhorn Baptist Church, a member of the Mystic Tie Masonic Lodge No. 450 F&AM, chaplain for the Taylor County Sheriffs Department and former chaplain for the Taylor County metro police. He was also a veteran of World War II. He was united in marriage on Jan. 3,1944, to Margaret Barlow, who survives. Other survivors include two sons, Gary Eaton of Cave City and the Rev. Jeff Eaton of Russell Springs; four grandchildren, Kim and Missy Eaton of Cave City and Andrew and Laura Eaton of Russell Springs; one sister, Olene Hale of Goodlettsville, Tn.; several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Rev. Eaton was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Tinnie Hines and four brothers, Rex, Eual, Sam and Delure Eaton. Funeral services were held Sunday, May 13, 1990, at the Parrott & Ramsey Funeral Home in Campbellsville with Rev. Jim Collison and Dr. James Jones officiating. Burial was in Campbellsville Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were Kentucky State Police Troopers Jim Brady, David Grant, Sammy Knopp, Roy Wheat, Richard Herron and Ken Abbott. Honorary pallbearers were Kentucky State Police, members of the Campbellsville Police Department, the Taylor County Sheriffs Department and all other police officers in attendance.
