John W. Cary, 87, of Longview, died Monday, February 18, 2002, at Summer Meadows Nursing Home in Longview. Services will be at 10 a.m., Friday, February 22, 2002, at the Rader Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Johnathan Jehorek and Dr. W. D. "Bill" O'Neal officiating. Music will be under the direction of Mr. Tim Konvalin. Burial will be Monday, February 25, 2002, at the Mission Park Cemetery-South in San Antonio.

John William was born in Paris, Texas, to the late Loy Renwicke and Alice Lee Early Cary. He moved to San Antonio in 1922. John was an accomplished musician and saxophonist having played with his high school band and the University of Texas Band. He graduated from The University of Texas at Austin in 1936, with a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree.

He was in the insurance business until January 1942 when he enlisted in the U.S. Army as a private. He was a Captain in the Finance Department of the 315th Bomb Wing of the 20th Air Force on Guam when he was discharged in February of 1946.

John then began his career in the savings and loan business in San Antonio. He was the past director of the Texas Savings and Loan League and served on committees of the U.S. Savings and Loan League.

John moved to Longview in 1968 to become vice-president and CEO of the First Federal Savings & Loan Association. He retired in January 1983 and remained as an Advisory Director to the Board of Directors for a number of years

John was active in Longview community affairs. He was past president of the Longview Lions Club, past director of the Longview Home Builders Association, past director and treasurer of the Longview Chamber of Commerce, past director of the United Way, past director of the Longview YMCA, and was an Elder in the First Presbyterian Church of Longview.

Survivors include his wife, Helen, of Longview; son, Dwight Alan and Marilyn Cary, of Austin; daughter, Cynthia Lee Cary, of Makawha, Hawaii; grandson, Joshua Dwight Cary, of Austin; other relatives and many friends.
