Mr. and Mrs. William Brock, their five children, along with two young and single men, Absalom and Isaac Funk, were the first settlers at Funks Grove. Mr. Brock came from Ohio by way of Sangamon County, Illinois and had explored the area around the grove before deciding to settle there [near what is now Brock Cemetery]. The Funks met Mr. Brock at Sangamon County and decided to join him to the new country based on his glowing description of the area. The Funks settled nearby.
