"Z. J. Culton Dead. The venerable Zachariah Johnston Culton died on Saturday evening, July 4th, at his late home near Brownsburg, at the advanced age of 82 years. His death resulted from no particular malady, but there was a general breaking down of the whole system, which comes with the infirmities of age. Mr. Culton had never held any office of trust except that he filled the position of one of the Judges of election at Brownsburg for many years. He was a gallant Confederate soldier, and served in Captain John Miller's company, the 2nd Rockbridge Artillery. His comrades testify to his fidelity to the cause, his unsullied life and nobility of character. Mr. Culton was married twice, but he survived both of his wives, his last wife, who was a Miss Gully dying but a few months ago. There were no children. His funeral tool place Sunday from New Providence church, the pastor, Rev. G. A. Wilson officiating." Lexington Gazette, Vol 99, #27, dated 8 Jul 1903 (see photo).

"Mr. Z. J. Culton Died Near Brownsburg. Reported for the County News. Brownsburg, July 6.—Mr. Zachariah Johnston Culton died Saturday evening, the 4th day of July, and was buried in New Providence cemetery Sunday. Services at the church conducted by Rev. G. A. Wilson, D. D. He was for a number of years a consistent member of New Providence church. Mr. Culton was born on the 10th day of February, 1822, and reared until manhood on the farm now owned by Mr. J. A. Runkle near him. He was invited by his uncle Zachariah Johnston, to come and live with him, which he did, and Mr. Johnston, because he was named for him, gave him his farm, which he sold to J. W. Culton a few years ago. He was a few months over 81 years old. Thus you see another old landmank has been moved, and has been planted in the cemetery of New Providence in sight of his old homestead. His name will be dropped from the roster of Confederate veterans on the camping ground here to answer to his name at the rollcall on the eternal camping-ground. Mr. Culton was a member of Captain Miller's battery (Second Rockbridge artillery), went through the war and at the surrender was in a hospital. Mr. Culton was twice married. His first wife was Miss Harriett Brooks, daughter of Major John Brooks, and his last wife was Miss Emma Gully. Mr. Culton had three brothers and two sisters, all living in Texas. Two brothers and one sister survive him. He was an upright man, a good quiet citizen and a reliable gentleman. For the past eight or ten years, with an invalid wife, he boarded with Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Culton, who cared for them in a way to give them every attention they needed. Mr. Culton during his last sickness for several weeks was as helpless as a child and cared for as such." Per the Rockbridge County News, Vol 19, #35, 9 July 1903 (see photo).

"The death of Z. J. Culton, aged 82 years, of tho vicinity of Brownsburg, occurred during the past few days. He served during the Civil War as a member of the Second Rockbridge Artillery." Per the Times Dispatch (Virginia) dated 10 Jul 1903.
