On 14 Aug 1862 James mustered into service with the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, being credited to the quota of Charlton, Worcester County, Massachusetts. He was 27 years and 10 days old.
Stephen P. Bond, Calvin Bond, and James, three brothers, served together in the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry.
In addition, two brothers-in-law of the Bond family served in the same unit: Stephen Robbins, and Francis A. Barnes.
On 3 Jul 1863 James was wounded in the shoulder at The Battle of Gettysburg, and on 18 Aug 1864 James ended military service.
His first wife had died during the war, and on 20 Feb 1865 he married Malinda Jane Rice, daughter of James Rice and Mary Maynard, at Dudley, Massachusetts, in a second marriage for him and the first for her.
