He served as a Private in Co. C of the 2nd Virginia Reserves (Booker's Regiment, Buckingham Reserves). His double-first cousin, also named Charles Henry Coleman (1836-1905), served in Co. H of the 2nd Virginia Cavalry.
Census records corroborate his birth date in his parents' family Bible record, following his elder sister Mary (Mollie) birth two years earlier in 1844. His granddaughter, Mrs. Susan Coleman Reynolds confirmed that he pretended to be older in order to enlist, and persisted claiming an earlier birth date throughout his life, eventually celebrating his "100th" birthday.
Sometime after the War, he came to work on the Branch farm west of Oakville, and married Susie, who became the sole heir, in 1876.
