Clifford D. White

Clifford D. White, 87, of Miller died Tuesday, June 1, 1993, at St. Mary's Hospital in Pierre.

Funeral services were held Saturday, June 5, at the First United Methodist Church in Miller with Reverend Richard Rinearson officiating. Janet Fritzsche was organist and Deanna Smith was soloist. Masonic Rites were performed at St. Lawrence Masonic Lodge #39 AF & AM. Burial was in the G.A.R. Cemetery.

Clifford Duane White was born May 15, 1906, in McCook County, South Dakota, the son of Eber Wesley and Frances Adeline (Grandy) White. The family lived on a homesteaded farm near Canistota where he attended school and graduated with honors. He earned his B.S. degree from Dakota Wesleyan in Mitchell in 1928 and a M.A. from the University of South Dakota in 1943.

He married Nereida Juanola Hook on May 25, 1929. He taught school at Midland, DeSmet and Colton and was superintendent of schools at Glenham, roscoe and Canistota and Ellsworth, MN.

He and his wife owned and operated the Canistota Hardware from 1948-56 when they moved to Miller where they owned the coast to Coast store until retirement in 1972.

He was a 60-year member of the Masonic Order and a Shriner, a member of the Eastern Star, Lions and Kiwanis and a 37-year member of the First United Methodist Church in Miller. He was a Scoutmaster in Midland 1929-30 and Canistota in 1950, and was a sustaining member of the Sioux Council.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Lavere (Connie)Lund of Encino, CA; one son, Darrell D. White and his wife, Imelda of Davenport, IA; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Orval White of Lennox; and one sister, Elsie Johannson of Canistota.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Nereida, on May 16, 1993; his parents; five brothers; one sister; and one son, Oliver.

Pallbearers were Robert Blachford, Thom Anderson, Milford Wieland, Kenneth Augspurger, Jim Jones and Ruben Widmayer.

Arrangements were announced by Reck Funeral Home in Miller.
