Doris Marguerite Wilson spent her childhood in Covington and Atlanta. She graduated from Memminger High School in Charleston, SC, in 1923. Afterward she taught school until June 1935, when she married Forrest Franklin Matthews in Cannon Chapel at Emory University in Atlanta. Following the wedding, the newlyweds left by train for Washington, DC, where they lived for several years.

Forrest and Doris were the parents of three daughters.
