David A. Bates of Braintree, a machine operator for Polaroid Corp., died, apparently of a heart attack, yesterday in South Shore Hospital in Weymouth. He was 57.

Mr. Bates was born in Braintree and served in the Navy during peacetime.

Before joining Polaroid five years ago, he was employed by Schofield and South Shore form companies.

He was a member of the Columbian Square Men's Bowling League.

He leaves his wife, Patricia (Cuthbertson); three sons, Robert A. of Bridgewater, Bruce D. of Marshfield and Douglas P. of Quincy; a brother, the Rev. Albert E. of Quincy; a sister, Nancy J. Mills of Braintree; and five grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Sweeney Brothers Funeral Home in Quincy. Burial will be in Blue Hill Cemetery in Braintree.
