Mr. Bates was born in Braintree and served in the Navy during peacetime.
Before joining Polaroid five years ago, he was employed by Schofield and South Shore form companies.
He was a member of the Columbian Square Men's Bowling League.
He leaves his wife, Patricia (Cuthbertson); three sons, Robert A. of Bridgewater, Bruce D. of Marshfield and Douglas P. of Quincy; a brother, the Rev. Albert E. of Quincy; a sister, Nancy J. Mills of Braintree; and five grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Sweeney Brothers Funeral Home in Quincy. Burial will be in Blue Hill Cemetery in Braintree.
