Mary Jane is the eldest daughter of William Rose Cowell and Ann Chafer. She was born in Sculcoates, Yorkshire East Riding, England. Her parents, having come to the US previously, her mother returned for her while pregnant with Ocean Ann. She traveled to the US with her mother in 1854 and was on the ship when Ocean Ann was born.
At the age of 15 she was married to Isac Johnson on Feb 25, 1857 in Hampstead, Rockingham County, New Hampshire. The Cowell family moved from New Hampshire to Iowa between 1860-1870 and Mary Jane and her husband followed, they lived in Franklin township, Iowa. In 1885 Mary Jane & Isac appear in the Minnesota state census in Paynesville and reside in the area until their deaths.
