Clarence Dafoe Burned When Gasoline Explodes
Clarence Dafoe, 2 Brighton St., suffered second degree burns about the face and body Monday afternoon when gasoline he was using to burn weeds in the garden exploded, igniting his clothes. Mr. Dafoe carefully poured the gasoline on a large pile of weeds, .then stooped to light the waste material with a match. The gasoline exploded the minute it was ignited and set Mr. Dafoe's clothing on fire. He managed to extinguish the flames and rushed to Dr. C. E. Elkins' office for treatment. His condition is improving.

Clarence Dafoe, 69, of 2 Brighton, died suddenly at 10:15 p.m. last night, Aug. 11, 1954, at his home.He wag born Aug. 5, 1885 in Aultsville Ont. the son of Robert and Mary Gallinger Dafoe. He was educated there and in 1918 came to Massena to reside. From 1936 to 1951 he was employed at the Masena. Works of Alcoa. Recently he had constructed homes and for a time was custodian of the First Methodist Church. He married the former Miss Caroline Vincent who survives. Also surviving are one son, Ronald, 14, and two brothers, Fred and Ross Dafoe of Aultsville.Mr. Dafoe was a member of the Methodist Church, Massea Lodge 882, IOOF, and of the IndependentOrder of Foresters. The body was taken to the Donaldson Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the home where the body is remaining, at 2 p.m. in the First Methodist Church. Buial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, in Ontario.

Clarence Dafoe Funeral Rites
Many friends and relatives attended the funeral of Clarence D. J. Dafoe, 69, at the First Methodist Church at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon.
The Rev. William O. Thomas, pastor conducted the services. Willard Maddeh sang the "Lord's Prayer" and the church choir sang "No Shadows Yonder". Burial was made in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Osnabruck, Ont.
Mr. Dafoe died suddenly at his home at 2 Brighton Heights, Wednesday evening, Aug. 11, 1954, at 10 o'clock. Death was due to a coronary attack. He was apparently in good health and his death came as a great shock to his family and friends.
He was born in Aultsville, Ont., Aug. 5, 1885, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert J. Dafoe, Aultsville. He attended schools in Canada and he married Miss Carrie R. Vincent, Gallingertown, Ont., Nov. 6, 1916.
Mr. and Mrs. Dafoe moved to Massena in December 1920. For 15 years he was employed by J. J. Taylor & Sons Co., and then worked at the aluminum plant as an auxiliary military policeman.
Always very energetic and interested in carpentry, Mr. Dafoe built several homes in Massena just as a hobby. He completed the last on in July.
Mr. Dafoe was a member of the First Methodist Church and for years had served as an usher. He never failed to greet the people with a cheery smile and a handshake, and he added a great deal to the church hospitality. He was a member of the official board. He was a member of St. Lawrence Lodge 882, Odd Fellows, and the Canadian Foresters.
Surviving are his wife and one son, Ronald, Massena; two brothers, Fred Dafoe, Aultsville, Ont., and Ross Dafoe on the family homestead in Aultsville, and a number of nieces and nephews. Among those from out-of-town attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. William J. Francis, Mr. and Bernard Presnel, Arnold Warner, all of Rochester; Mrs. Ada Vincent, Watertown; Mrs. and Mrs. Gordon Reiley and daughter, Donne, Montreal; Mrs. and Mrs. Fraser McRae, Avonmore; Mr. and Mrs. Steve Campbell, Chalk River, Ont., Allen and Lena Hollister, Ottawa; Mr. and Mrs. Roy Rupert, Finch, Ont., and Mrs. George Cain, Cornwall.
People of Massena and the surrounding communities expressed their sorrow in his passing by the floral tributes, cards, calls and other acts of kindness to the family and relatives.
