HATCHER William H. 25 Feb 1869 Age 39

Fort Wayne (IN) Daily Democrat
1 Mar 1869, p. 1

We are pained to learn that William Hatcher, of the firm of Earl & Hatcher, of Lafayette, died last night in that city at near nine o'clock, after a short illness. Mr. Hatcher grew up measurably in Lafayette. His father at one time was Mayor of the city, but dying, left his son without the means of commencing life. At an early age the business habits and strict integrity of young Hatcher drew the attention of some of the best and most substantial business men of Lafayette to his merits, and through their agency and influence he was started in business.

The firm of Earl & Hatcher, largely created and supported by the deceased, is well known as one of the most wealthy and enterprising business establishments in the West. Mr. Hatcher had returned but a short time from Cuba, where he had been engaged in making purchases for the firm. His death seems to have been unexpected by his most intimate friends, and will cause a loss in the business and social circles of Indiana that will not soon be replaced. -- Indianapolis Journal
