He was born April 9, 1866, at Camp Creek, Union County, Ga. He was united in marriage to Miss Rebecca Bishop in 1885, came to Arkansas in 1897. To this union, 12 children were born, Mrs. W. A. Avey, Clinton Ark.; Mrs. G. C. Patton, Springdale, Ark.; T. O. Hayes, North Little Rock, Ark.; Mrs. J. T. Rorie, San Jose, Calif.; George D. Hayes, Phoenix, Ariz.; Z. A. Hayes, Pearisburg, Va.; M. S. Hayes, Santa Clara. Calif.; and R. C. Hayes, Clifton, Ariz.; all of whom survive.
Noah Hayes, Miss Olive Hayes, and an infant son preceded him in death. His first wife died July 8, 1918. A few years later he was married to Mrs. Letha Younce, who also preceded him in death by a few weeks. Surviving Mr. Hayes in addition to the nine children, are 34 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren, two brothers, Rev. R. M. Hayes, Dennard, Ark., Jess Hayes, Morganton, Ga., and one sister, Mrs. E. M. Bishop, Ozark, Mo. Mr. Hayes united with Missionary Baptist Church at the age of 22 and lived a devoted Christian until death.
Uncle Joe, as he was commonly called, always wore a smile and had a kind word for everyone. He was loved by all who knew him. He was laid to rest in Salem cemetery, August 15, 1950. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. W. L. Chadwick, pastor.
