Dessie is the daughter of Daniel Enoch Guffey and Nancy Elizabeth Chilcote. She is the sister of James, Maggie, Thomas, Josie, David John, Lucina, and twin Claude.

She first married Leonard Babcock with whom she had three children, Rachel, Alvin, and Nellie. Then, in 1950, she married Raymond H. Daw. Although he had two children, Virginia and Alfred, she and Raymond did not have children together.
