Samuel Caddell Davis was born on February 21, 1826 in Giles County, VA to Archibald Davis and Elizabeth Caddall.
He married Elizabeth Agnes Patterson on September 9, 1851 in Wythe County.
Samuel moved to Long Spur, Little Walkers Creek, Wythe (now Bland) County in 1857. He and Elizabeth had 13 children.
He died on October 23, 1906 in Bland.
Samuel enlisted in the Confederate States Army, the 45th Infantry Regiment, Company F "The Bland County Sharpshooters" under Captain Andrew J. Grayson.
He was issued clothing on December 15, 1864.
Samuel was captured at Waynesboro on March 2, 1865; prisoner of war at Fort Delaware on Pea Patch Island in the Delaware River approximately 15 miles south of Wilmington, Delaware.
A query was made to the Fort Delaware Society about Private Samuel Davis and in answer,
"He was assigned to Prison Division 2 which was most likely one of the wooden barracks located outside of the Fort itself".
Samuel took the Oath of Allegiance and was released on June 19, 1865. He was described as having gray eyes with light hair and was five feet eleven inches tall. Samuel probably enlisted on May 29, 1861 in Wytheville with his brother, Rush F. Davis who was also in the 45th.
