OBIT: Milton Hawkins. One of Breckinridge County's oldest men, Milton Hawkins, in his 96 year, died at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr and Mrs J E Smith near Hite's Run on Dec 21. Mr Hawkins was one of the few veterans of the Civil War, having enlisted in 1863, when he was 18 years of age. He had led and active life until about a year ago when he was no longer able to walk about the home, and since that time has continued to fail in health. Surviving are 3 daughters, Mrs. D E Chapin, Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Florence Hawkins of Seattle, Washington. There are 13 grandchildren and a number of great grandchildren, and a brother, Silas Hawkins. The burial took place according to his request in the Agnew graveyard, and the brief service was in charge of the pastor, Rev William Varble, of the Hites Run Baptist Church. Mr Hawkins for 50 years or more had been a member of this church and many years as loyal in church attendance. Pallbearers for the service were grandsons, including Layman Hawkins, Milton Smith, Lonnie Basham, Roy Chapin and 2 grandsons-in-law, Cleve Miller and Hubert Greenwood.

Many years ago, he married Miss Lucy Askins who died 33 years ago. Surviving with Mr Hawkins are 3 daughters, Mrs D E Chapin, Mrs, J E Smith and Mrs. E O Hawkins of Seattle, Washington. They are 9 grandchildren, several great grandchildren, and Daniel Lewis Hendrick, son of Mr. & Mrs. Dan Hendrick of Louisville is a great, great grandson, representing the 5th generation. Silas Hawkins, who resides at the country home of his daughter, Mrs. Clarence Maysey, and Mr. Maysey, is now in his 92nd year. He married Miss Alice Chapin, who passed away about 10 years ago. He has several daughters, including Mrs. Maysey, Mrs. Harmon Blaine, Mrs. Wave Miller, and Mrs. Kirby Dowell, Will Dowell and Jeff Dowell, all of Illinois, and Fred Hawkins of New Bethel. The two elderly men small of statue, and familiar figures about the New Bethel and Hites Run communities are the sons of the late Richard Hawkins and Letitia Tate Hawkins, They were both farmers, both members for many years of the Hites Run Baptist Church, and of these 2 country churches their children became members as they reached manhood and womanhood. Over this part of the county the 2 small bent figures are known as "Uncle Milt and Uncle Si Hawkins" and their relatives number a large population of these 2 rural localities.

Discharged on 23 August 1865 at Cloverport by reason of expiration of term of service. Milton Hawkins was born in Breckinridge Co, Ky and is 18 yrs of age, 5 ft and 5 inches high, fair complexion, Blue eyes, and light hair and his occupation, when enrolled, a farmer.
