The second wife of Hendrik Pieters Scholte, Maria Hendrika Elisabeth Krantz was the daughter of well-off parents, Johannes Justus Krantz and Maria Theodora Christoffels. They married June 13, 1845. The couple, along with his three daughters from his marriage to Sara Maria Brandt, immigrated to America in 1847 abroad the SS Sarah Sand landing in Boston, Massachusetts. After long and arduous journeys, the family and a large group of immigrants arrived at Keokuk, Iowa. Leaving Keokuk, the family arrived at Pella where Henry Scholte told his wife that they were going to build a beautiful Pella! Nine children were born to Maria and Henry Scholte, eight in Pella with only three surviving beyond infancy. After Henry Scholte died, Maria married Robert Beard on July 2, 1870. After the death of Mr. Scholte in 1868, Maria, to ease her grief at his death, began to again play the piano.
