George Vaughan Strong, born near Clinton in Sampson County, North Carolina, was the son of Dr. Salmon and Eliza Sampson Strong. His family roots traced back to Connecticut before settling in North Carolina. Named after his ancestor George Vaughan of Dublin, Ireland, who had bestowed land in North Carolina upon the Sampson family, Strong spent part of his youth at his uncle's estate, Orton, near Wilmington. He attended Lovejoy Academy in Raleigh before graduating with honors from The University of North Carolina in 1845. In 1847, he published "Francis Herbert, A Romance of the Revolution, and Other Poems," dedicated to a university classmate. Although later in life he sought to distance himself from this work, Strong made significant contributions as a judge and legislator.
