AJ Leatherwood was born on October 12, 1916, and passed away on Saturday, December 22, 2012 at the age of 96.
AJ was proceeded in death by his son, James Cory "Corkey" Leatherwood.
AJ was born in Rising Star TX, and moved to Albuquerque in approx. 1920. AJ worked with his father, (who owned Valley Feed Store) in the feed business in the late 1930s. AJ then joined the Cargill Grain Company as a traveling salesman in New Mexico. AJ won the Presidents Club Award twice for outstanding sales. This award was given to the individual for the highest feed sales in the nation. AJ loved traveling throughout New Mexico.
AJ was an avid fisherman and actively fished almost every lake and stream in New Mexico. AJ loved hiking and exploring. AJ proudly walked and won the Duke City Marathon several years in a row for his age group. As a matter of practice he hiked the La Luz trail every morning to the five mile marker for 15+ years. AJ retired at an early age and decided to start his world traveling. AJ enjoyed traveling and visiting all seven continents, in addition to all corners of the United States. AJ was a life long horseman, and enjoyed having and working with horses. AJ was very active throughout his entire life, in his daughter and his granddaughters horse activities and with the many World and National titles that they have won.
AJ was a wonderful father and grandfather. AJ was full of spirit and passion, and most importantly, he was a loving, strong willed, tenacious mentor and a loving friend that we all looked up to. We will miss him dearly.
AJ is survived by his daughter, Jan Gibson and her partner, Tom Frank, his two granddaughters, Shana Gibson Showers and her husband, Brandon, granddaughter, Lindsey Gibson and her fiancé, Marcus Chambers. AJ is also survived by his great-granddaughter, Tegan Coy Showers. AJ was surrounded by life long love from several nephews, Patrick Reynolds, (who traveled on many journeys with AJ) Jerry and Mike Reynolds and niece, Ann Madigan. AJ was also very honored to have several close and dear friends, Charles Solomon, Faith Myers, Ron Robertson, Pat Whitlatch (Iowa), Carolyn Elliott (Florida) and his cousin, Ruth Carroll (TN).
Services are planned for January 12, 2013 with a graveside service at 9:30 a.m. to be held at Mount Calvary Cemetery, 1900 Edith Blvd. NE. A celebration of AJ's life, will immediately follow at the El Camino Restaurant located at 6800 4th Street, NW.
