After a long illness here at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. H. Sims, the spirit of Mrs. J. T. Gibson returned to its Maker at 7:45 o'clock on the evening of June 25th, 1911. Decedent was in her seventy-fourth year and was preceeded to the great beyond by her husband only a few short months. Her maiden name was Bryan and she was born in Georgia, moving with her husband, to Texas in 1865*. She was a staunch christian and had long been a member of the church.
The remains were accompanied to their last resting place beside her husband at DeBerry by N. B. Walker, undertaker and friend of the family for many years.
Obituary - Beeville Picayune - June 30, 1911
*There is an error in the obituary as the family did not move to Texas until 1871.
The family moved from Georgia to Texas around 1871. Thomas was a successful business man before the war and made his fortune back after the war. He is buried at Gibson-Johnson cemetery in Harrison Co. next to his wife, Margaret, their young daughter, Julia 1877-1884 and their four very young children. All are in unmarked graves. We do not know where his son Thomas Rupert is buried.
Thomas and Margaret had nine children, only 5 survived infancy:
Lula Mae Gibson (Westmoreland) 1858-1932
Lena A. Gibson (Sims) 1860-1935
Thomas Rupert 1865- ?
Julia Gibson 1877-1884
Wiley Hill Gibson 1880-1965
Thomas has a cenotaph memorial at Millville Cemetery in Texas. You can find this at findagrave #91206448. The Gibson cemetery is so hard to get to, family members decided to put his CSA headstone in the same cemetery as his half brothers in 2012.
