Avis Gay – November 4, 1910 – April 15, 2001
Avis Gay, 90, of Surprise, died at 3:25 p.m. Sunday, April 15, 2001, at her home.
Mrs. Gay was a member of Surprise Christian Church, where she had been a member of the Ladies Aid. She was an avid quilter and graduated from Cortland High School in 1929. She had retired after working 22 years at the Gerwin Shoe Factory in Seymour.
Born November 4, 1910, in Jackson County, she was the daughter of Oscar and Edna Isaacs Anderson. On December 23, 1933, she married George Washington Gay. He died February 28, 1950.
Survivors include five children, Tom Gay and George Gay, both of Brownstown; John Gay and Nancy Gay, both of Seymour; and Jean Meyer, Columbus; seventeen grandchildren; forty great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
A son, Billy Gay; a brother, Ralph Anderson; a sister, Mabel Thompson; a grandson, George Wayne Gay; and three great-grandsons, Mark, David and James Gay preceded her in death.
Brother Nelson Lee will conduct funeral services at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Winklepleck-Weesner Funeral Home, Brownstown. Burial will be in Acme Cemetery, Seymour.
Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be given to Surprise Christian Church.
