James McCue, a highly respected former resident of Melancthon, died at his home in Dundalk, on Thursday, March 8th, in his 85th year. Mr. McCue was very active up to a few days before his death and was able to read the papers without the aid of glasses. Death followed a short illness following a fall he sustained the preceding Saturday. Deceased was one of the earliest settlers of the New Survey of Melancthon. He was born in County Mayo, Ireland, on May 1st, 1843, and was only four years of age when his parents came to Canada, in 1847. They settled first in Adjala township. On June 8th, 1851, the family came to Melancthon, locating on lot 280, con. 1, N.E., but afterwards purchasing lot 7, con. 3, N.E., where the father died in 1869 and the mother in 1885. In 1869 Mr. McCue married Margaret Purtel, a young lady school teacher of Arthur township, who survives him. He took an active part in the separation movement that led to the formation of Dufferin as a separate county, and was appointed a Justice of the Peace on the formation of the county. He was a school trustee and secretary-treasurer of his section for many years. After going to Dundalk he also served as school trustee for a few years. He was one of the first Directors of the Dufferin Farmers' Mutual Fire Insurance Co. In religion he was a Roman Catholic and was largely instrumental in having the Melancthon R. C. Church established. Mr. and Mrs. McCue moved to Dundalk eighteen years ago. The widow and four sons and three daughters survive: Dr. Patrick J., Gull Lake, Sask.; Dr. Peter F., Walkerton; Michael J. and James A., Melancthon; Mrs. D. J. O'Connel, Mount Forest; Mrs. J. J. Cronin, Melancthon; Miss Gertie, nurse, at home. The funeral took place to Melancthon R.C. cemetery, Saturday morning, Rev. Father Callaghan officiating. The pallbearers were Messrs. M. J. Matthews, D. Broderick, S. D. O'Connor, Wm. Connor, B. McManaman, and P. McCue.
