Oldest child of Miles Murphy Templeton and Emma Julia Johnson, Mabel was born in 1878 in Illinois. Shortly after, her family moved to Taylor County, Iowa and Mabel would be joined by siblings Vivian (1880), Fred (1882), Ethel (1889), Sanford (1891) and Chloe (1896). On February 11, 1897 Mabel was married to George Washington Hardin, a native of Missouri. Mabel and George were the parents of Walter Bryan Hardin (1897) and Bernice M. Hardin (1898). The family moved westward through Minnesota and North Dakota to Buffalo, Wyoming where Emma died on May 21, 1902. Her mother was present at the time of death.
