Alton B. Whitaker Jr., 83, of Bloomington, Indiana was called to be with the Lord on July 19, 2011 from the Bloomington Nursing and Rehab Center, he was surrounded by his loving wife Barbara (Harlan) and family. Alton was preceded in death by former wives: Charlotte Louise Solomon and Ona Whitaker, along with his parents and a grandson. Alton was born October 30, 1927 in Cloverdale, Indiana to Alton B Whitaker SR. and Mabel LuLu (McNabb) Whitaker. He has brothers Andrew Jackson of Spencer, Joseph Lee of Bloomington and adopted sister Sandra of Maryland. He was blessed with 3 children, Norman R. Whitaker Sr. of Florida, Terry L. Whitaker of Indianapolis, Marlena J. Whitaker of Ohio. He had 2 stepdaughters with wife Barbara, Kathy Soncrant of California and Karen Salyers of Terre Haute. Alton has 16 Grandchildren, 43 Great-Grandchildren and 5 Great-Great-Grandchildren.
Alton was a member of the Sherwood Oaks Christian Center in Bloomington and loved to play bingo at the Senior Center in Spencer. He loved country and gospel music, in which he played on his organ, harmonica, and guitar.
Alton was a World War II Veteran serving in the Merchant Marines and Army.
A celebration of Life Service will be held at 12 Noon on Wednesday July 27, 2011 at the Deremiha-Frye Mortuary, Greene & Harrell Chapel in Bloomington. Friends and family may gather from 9AM-12 Noon on Wednesday at the Mortuary. Graveside services with Military Honors will be held at the Graveside at Rose Hill Cemetery in Bloomington.
