Kathryn (Blakey) Daniel
Daniel, Kathryn Blakey Beloved wife, mother and grandmother, passed away on December 24, 2012 in Allen, Texas. Kathryn was born on December 28, 1933 near Savoy, Texas to Robert Earl and Vida Inez Blakey. After the death of her mother, she grew up in the small town of Savoy as Earl Blakey's beloved daughter and was the valedictorian of her high school class. She attended Austin College and East Texas State on scholarships in English and History. In 1951, her brother, Tom Blakey, introduced her to the love of her life, Jesse Daniel. Kathryn and Jesse were married on April 18, 1953 and moved to Erding Air Base near Munich Germany where Jesse was a Lieutenant in the Air Force and Courier for the Armed Forces Courier Service. As an Air Force wife, Kathryn served in many leadership positions in Officer's Wives Clubs, including Vice President at Shephard AFB and RAF Bentwaters, England. Kathryn was a devoted mother to Michelle, their only daughter. In 1974, Kathryn was diagnosed with Stage 3 ovarian cancer and given less than 6 months to live. By the grace of God, she survived and lived another 38 years, becoming one of the longest survivors of this deadly disease. After her recovery, she became active in cancer support, including 'Make Today Count' and 'I Can Cope' programs. She personally obtained the charter bringing the in-hospital 'I Can Cope' cancer program to Texas. As a result of her struggles with cancer, she wrote a book of poetry, Cancer of the Mind, which was published in 1976. Kathryn's advocacy and support of other cancer patients brought hope and comfort to many. In the 1970s and 80s she also worked as an instructor for Dale Carnegie and volunteered with the Women's Center of Ft. Worth. In 1992, she published a novel, January in Fannin County. She was diagnosed with cancer three more times and overcame each illness with grace, dignity and courage. In a letter to her family, she emphasized the importance of always forgiving others and continuing to love them, no matter how difficult the task. To her grandchildren, Nicole, Carolyn and Jack, she was "GG", the "Greatest Grandmother," who loved each one of them beyond measure. She died peacefully and spent her last days surrounded by her loved ones, who lifted her up in prayer. Although we will miss her terribly, we are thankful that she went to be with her Lord for Christmas. Kathryn is survived by her husband Major Jesse Daniel of Richardson, Texas, her brother O.J. Blakey of Arlington, daughter Michelle Chadwick and son-in-law Jim Chadwick and grandchildren Nicole, Carolyn and Jack Chadwick of Dallas, along with many cousins, nephews and nieces, and great nephews and nieces. Her brother, Tom Blakey, predeceased her. The family owes special thanks to Dr. Gerardo Trillo and staff at Texas Oncology-Frisco and Dr. Chester Graham and Dr. Jari Khan, and the many caring nurses of Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Allen. A private interment will be held on January 2nd, followed by a public memorial service at the historic Savoy Methodist Church in Savoy, Texas at 2:30 p.m. The family will receive visitors in the church beginning at 1:30 p.m. prior to the service. Rev. Dr. David Howeth will be presiding, assisted by Fr. Jonathan Austin.
