James married Mary Osborne in Platte, Missouri, in 1867.

James was a farmer in Atchinson County, Kansas, in the 1870s. Sometime around 1880 he and his family moved to Texas. They lived in Quanah, Texas, before moving to Dallas, where they lived during the 1900 census.

James was survived by his wife, three sons, and one daughter. In the 1900 census his occupation was day laborer.

Note: In 1920 James's widow, Mary, was living in South Dakota with her son Robert E. Beard. James's daughter Nannie Elizabeth Beard Stephens die in Seminole, Gaines County, Texas, on July 9, 1948. The death certificate did not name the cemetery.
