Mary Lou grew up in Seattle and California, and moved to Kotzebue, Alaska around 1932 to help her mother run a family business. After going to college in California for a couple of years, she came back to Alaska and married Glenn Briggs. They lived in Nome before settling in Eagle River, where they spent the rest of their lives. The couple had no children but loved their nieces and nephews like their own.
