The Winchell Family History states Richard was born as the Winchell family were emigrating from New York to Knox Co., Indiana Territory (which is now Perry Co., IN.)

Richard was married three times and the father of fourteen children.

1st married Mary Ann Miller on June 8, 1831 in Perry County, IN
They were the parents of:
Priscilla, and Lucinda.

2nd married Rosella H. Finch on September 8, 1838 in Perry Co., IN.
They were they parents of:
Mary, Smith W., *Nancy Jane, James, Nirum Lafayette, Mable Eliza, and Alice Emeline.
Two sons of Richard and Rosella's were in the Civil War. Smith served 3 three years and James was killed in action at Murfreesboro, TN in'65.

3rd married Sarah 'Sallie' Bowman Thrasher on March 22, 1864 in Perry County, IN
All the children from this marriage are buried in Deer Creek Cemetery, Perry co., IN.
They were the parents of:
Richard Sherman, Uriah Grant, Edward Lincoln, Hattie Dell, and Winona E.
