FAIRFAX — Mr. Franklin Edward Tillery, of Hampton, 85, died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2007, in Manor Care Nursing Home in Fairfax, Va.

Born in Hampton, Mr. Tillery was the son of the late Benjamin P. and Sallie Sinclair Tillery. He graduated from Hampton High School in 1939 and attended the Newport News Shipbuilding Apprentice School. Mr. Tillery served in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard the USS Randolph aircraft carrier in the Pacific. After the war, he attended and graduated from the University of Michigan in 1950. He worked as a nuclear engineer for the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company from 1950 until his retirement in 1984. He was a lifelong member of Hampton Baptist Church and a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Mr. Tillery had a great passion for education, sponsoring many scholarships at the College of William and Mary, the University of Mary Washington, the University of Michigan, and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky.

Surviving are three daughters, Margaret Tillery Bell of Farmington Hills, Mich., and her husband, Douglas, and their children, Kirk, Amy, Christopher, and Jeffrey, Sue Ann Tillery of Fairfax, and Mary Jo Nidiffer of Mount Washington, Ky., and her husband, Thomas, and their children, Brandon and Jenna; and one sister, Jeanne Tillery Vesey of Santa Barbara, Calif.

Mr. Tillery was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Poe Tillery, who died in May of 1983. A funeral service will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, in Hampton Baptist Church, 40 Kings Way with Dr. Chester Brown and Dr. Charles Smith officiating. Burial will be in the Parklawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home.
