DR. GEORGE B. ESTERLY DIES AT 79

SARCOXIE - Dr. George B. Esterly, 79, 1100 Joplin St., Sarcoxie, prominent retired Sarcoxie dentist, died at 9 p.m. Sunday at McCune-Brooks Hospital in Carthage following several months of health.
Born October 16, 1906 in Carthage, he was a son of the late Burton H. Esterly, prominent Carthage attorney and Nellie Weide Esterly, renown artist.
He was graduated from Carthage High School in 1925. He was graduated from the Western Dental College in Kansas City in May of 1929. He came to Carthage and was associated with Dr. Leland Jones for two years, then moved to Sarcoxie where he practiced for 44 years, retiring in 1975. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Sarcoxie; was twice president of Southwest Missouri Dental Society from 1944-1966. He was a member of the PSI Omega Dental fraternity and the Pierre Fouchard fraternity.

His community service at Sarcoxie included 25 years as a Boy Scout leader, Chamber of Commerce activities, 40-year member of the Sarcoxie Lions Club, and had served on the Sarcoxie City Council and the Sarcoxie Board of Education.

During World War II, he served as a captain in the medical detachment of the State Guard in the second Missouri Infantry of the Houn Dawg regiment.
He also was a member of the Sarcoxie Masonic Lodge No. 293, Order of the Eastern Star, Scottish Rite Valley, Joplin, and Abou Ben Adhem Shrine, Springfield.

Dr. Esterly was married May 16, 1930 in Kansas City to Louise Zane. She died October 2, 1964.
He was then married September 1, 1965 in Scottsdale, Ariz., to Mrs. Natalia Pelsue Owens, who survives.
Surviving in addition to the wife are two daughters, Mary Lou Smerdon, Rolling Meadows, Illinois; Virginia Larson, Universal City, Texas; two sons, George R. Esterly, Belleville, Illinois; and William K. Esterly, Ocean Springs, Mississippi; two step-children, Suzanne Stockton, Anaheim, Calif.; Robert Owens, Noble, Okla; two brothers, Alburt C. Esterly, Springfield, and Robert A. Esterly, 1628 S. Maple St., Carthage; 10 grandchildren, eight step-grandchildren and four step-great grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Sarcoxie United Methodist Church. The Rev. Dan Lind and the Rev. Earl Knowles will officiate.
The family will receive friends at the church from 1-2 p.m. Wednesday.
The Rose Croix Service will be conducted by the Joplin Consistory. Burial will be in Park Cemetery, Carthage.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Knell Mortuary.
