When we were making the preliminary arrangements for our Souvenir we were asked if we should publish pictures of persons outside of Baldwinsville. A reply in the affirmative brought out a request from a veteran that Edward S. Bentley represent Little Utica. To this we agreed and the folio wing sketch of that well known friend of the soldier, the excellent, citizen, has been herewith submitted: Edward S. Bentley. son of William and Hannah Averill Bentley. was born in the town of Westerlo. Albany county. New York. July 19. 1825, He was one of a family of five children and received a common school education, and settled near Little Utica in 1841. He married Miss Mary Coffin Sept 14. 1846 and they resided at Little Utica until the time of his death. He being engaged in farming and the purchase of farm produce. Mr Bentley was greatly interested in the support of the church in his village and though not a member, was a trustee for many years. He was a worthy member of the Masonic fraternity. He never held public office, but his sterling integrity made him the trusted friend of many. A war Democrat, he loved the boys in blue and gave his time and money liberally for upholding the principles of the Union. Every soldier trusted him and at one time he held for the soldiers of his section $25000. they having no security but his word, which was enough. In all the relations of life he was true to the confidence so freely bestowed and his memory is cherished as one of which his children may be justly proud.
