Obituary of Nerville Lewis Cole

"Nerville L. Cole, 87, former village president and lifelong resident of this village died unexpectedly in his home yesterday morning (Mar. 31, 1943). He also was a former chairman of the Orleans County Board of Supervisors.

He was born in the Town of Clarendon, Aug. 25, 1855, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Ira Cole. He moved to Holley when he was 16.

He received his early education in the Brown School House in Clarendon. He later began teaching in area district schools, continuing with this type of teaching for eight years.

In 1884 he purchased a half-interest in his father's coal, lumber and construction business in Holley and in 1888 he purchased his fathers interest in the business. Mr. Cole retired from active business in 1940, selling his Holley business to his son Lewis, and the lumber business in Albion to another son, Kirk.

Active in political affairs of Orleans County, Cole was a lifelong Republican and served as supervisor for the Town of Murray for nine years, three of which he served as chairman of the Orleans County board. He also was president of the village of Holley for four terms.

Mr. Cole was elected to the Board of Education here 30 years ago and served continuously until 1942, when he retired.

In his early life Mr. Cole for a number of years was employed in the Internal Revenue Bureau office in Rochester. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Odd Fellows and Macabees. A supporter of the Presbyterian Church here, he was on the Board of Trustees for many years.

He was married in January 1884 to Miss Kate Hatch who died Apr. 19, 1929.
Surviving are two daughters. Doris of Holley and Mrs. Charles (Edna) Nesbitt, Barre; two sons, Kirk of Albion and Lewis of Holley; seven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be held at 3 p. m. tomorrow in his home with the Rev. Theodore Hayes of East Avon officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery."

Nerville Lewis Cole is credited with building the Gothic Revival mortuary chapel at Hillside Cemetery in 1894 after his bid of $3,350.00 was accepted by the Holley Board of Trustees.
