Former Anchorage resident Eugene I. Nagel, 84, died July 23, 1999, at his daughter's home in Savage, Minn., from leukemia. A visitation was held at St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church, with a rosary. The Mass of Christian Burial was conducted at St. Patrick's. The Rev. Steven C. Moore officiated. Burial was with full military honors at the Fort Richardson National Cemetery.

Mr. Nagel was born Dec. 9, 1914, in Milwaukee, Wis. He served in the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Army for 26 years. He was a veteran of World War II and a survivor of Pearl Harbor and the Korean War. Mr. Nagel worked for the U.S. government (General Services Administration) as an electrician until his retirement in 1978. He worked and lived in Auburn, Wash., from 1966 to 1972 and in Anchorage from August 1972 until September 1997. Mr. Nagel was a life member of the Knights of Columbus and the Roman Catholic Church. His parish at the time of his death was St. John the Baptist in Savage, Minn. His family said, ''After the death of his beloved wife, Gladys, Dad battled his deteriorating health with grace and fortitude. Our dearest father was sustained by a deep and abiding faith and love of God. Dad's loved ones will always cherish his sense of humor and miss that twinkle in his eyes. We were blessed with a father who was a hard worker, problem solver and a truly gentle man. He is deeply missed.''

Mr. Nagel is survived by his daughters and son-in-law, Mary P. Nagel of Alexandria, Va., Anne K. Nagel of Anchorage, and Robin and Doug Schaefer of Savage; his sons and daughter-in-law, Alan E. Nagel of Flagstaff, Ariz., and Bruce E. and Becki Nagel of McKenna, Wash.; and grandson, Clint Schaefer of Savage. Arrangements were made by Witzleben Family Funeral Homes & Crematory.
