Frederick W. Andrews, Jr., of Oak Lawn, Cranston, RI, 83, entered Eternal Life on Monday, February 20, 2012 after a courageous and long battle with colon cancer. He passed under the gentle care of his hospice team and in the presence of his loving family.
His wife of 61 years, Barbara J. (Moriarty) Andrews, and their 6 sons, David R. and his wife Joanne of Cranston, Dennis F. and his wife Cheryl of Warwick, Douglas W. of Cranston, Rev. Peter J., Pastor of St. Theresa and St. Christopher Parishes in Tiverton, Matthew P. and his wife Keri of Sayreville, NJ. and Michael J. and his wife Alisan of Stanhope, NJ, along with his surviving sister, Grace V. White of Cranston, will sorely miss his physical presence in their lives. He was a proud grandfather to four grandsons and four granddaughters as well as great-grandfather to one great-granddaughter and five great-grandsons.
A man of varied interests and great talents, Fred worked as a self-employed contractor for many years, offering meticulous detail to countless renovation, repair and building jobs. Clients would often wait months for his availability, so important was the quality and care he offered in his work. Prior to this work, Fred was a past employee of the former L. Vaughn Co., an architectural firm in Providence, where he worked as a draftsman, leaving there to begin his own business repairing and servicing lawn mowers and small engines. He also drove trailer trucks for the R. J. Moriarty Oil Co., taking ownership of the company under the name of Frederick W. Andrews, Jr. Transportation, for several years.
Many in the Oak Lawn neighborhood in which he was born, grew up and then raised his own family will remember Fred as the "gentleman farmer" whose hobby farm boasted such things as chickens, sheep, an occasional pig or pony, as well as extensive vegetable gardens on the small plots of land which he was proud to call home. He was highly involved with the 4-H organization for many years, leading several clubs and activities, was past Trustee of the Eastern States Exposition, "The Big E," was in charge of the sheep barn at the same for many years, and received numerous citations and awards for such work. Fred was a member of the RI Agricultural Council, serving as President for part of his membership, as well as a member of the RI Beekeepers Association.
Most remembered, however, will be his attention to detail in all that he accomplished as well as his overall goal in life to do things to the best of his ability, a quest and in whose success he could truly be proud. From the raising of his family, to the work accomplished with his hands, Fred sought only to offer what was right, fair and just. His quiet faith born of his Baptist tradition and life-long membership in the Oaklawn Community Baptist Church, as well as his gentle guidance to family and friends, have had profound effect on all he touched.
A period of visitation will take place on Friday, February 24, 2012 in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, 237 Garden Hills Drive, Cranston, RI, from 8:30-9:30am. A celebration of his life will follow in the church at 10:00am. Burial will take place immediately following in Woodland Cemetery, Knotty Oak Rd. at Washington St. in Coventry, RI. All are invited.
