Hortensia was the daughter of Peter MacGreal and Mary Doss.

She was the daughter of a longtime and prominent Brazoria lawyer and plantation owner and sister of Clarence MacGreal, a soldier in Gen. Sibley's Brigade,Octavia,James and Cornelia

Hortensia was also a vegetarian and strong advocate for the rights of animals. She believed in reincarnation. Her husband, who was a Union captain in the Civil War (37th Illinois Infantry) was also a vegetarian.
