Hamlet R. Brown was murdered, 16 Nov 1909. See below for details.

Born in Oxford, MA, Hamlet's parents decided to move west when he was about 12 years old. They moved to Chicago, IL, and continued on to Racine, WI two years later.

On 25 Apr 1861, Hamlet enlisted in the Union Army as a Private to fight in the Civial War. He was in Company D, 3rd Infantry Regiment Wisconsin and served for 3 years, mustering out of the same regiment 1 Jul 1864, in Wisconsin.

After the war Hamlet moved to Austin, MN in 1867, where he married Anna Matilda Parker, 17 Jun 1866, in Austin, MN. They had 4 children. Shortly after 1870 they moved from Austin to Los Angeles, CA. Anna's father, Rev. Hervey Isaac Parker, moved from Austin to CA in 1872 and it is likely that they all went at the same time.

Hamlet and Anna's marriage was turbulent and resulted in divorce, 17 Mar 1877, in Los Angeles, CA. It was a messy divorce that involved accusations of infidelity and scandal. Divorce was very uncommon in the late 1800s. A letter written by his granddaughter documents in great detail the drama that unfolded. The letter was preserved and a transcription is available.

After the divorce, Anna took the children away to Oakland, CA and they did not see their father again. There are no records indicating that Hamlet ever remarried. Hamlet was deeply loved by his daughters as was clearly detailed in the letter written by his granddaughter, despite their mother's efforts to persuade them otherwise.

Hamlet remained in the Los Angeles area until 1900 when he is found living in Fresno, CA. He was working as an accountant according to the census, living by himself.

By 1909 Hamlet was running a Lodging House in Fresno. On November 16th of that year, a man named Jim Kerfoot entered Hamlet's lodging house with intentions of seeing his wife from whom he had been separated. Hamlet refused to let him see her, so Mr. Kerfoot pulled out a gun and shot and killed Hamlet. A newspaper article detailing the incident published November 19th in the Oakland Tribune, stated that a manhunt was in progress to catch Kerfoot.
