Vera Akel began her 90 year journey in this life on October 12, 1921 in Cotton Plant, Arkansas. She was the only daughter, among three brothers, in the home of Brownie and Mable (Ford) Caplena. Maturing into a beautiful young lady, Vera completed high school and at age 19 married her sweetheart, Abraham Akel, Sr., on April 27, 1941 in Hazen. "Abe" and Vera spent a lifetime in the Brinkley community, becoming well-respected and loved business owners. For many years they operated Akel's Grocery on the corner of Hemlock & New Orleans. They looked forward to the daily visits from friends. The neighborhood children received a special kindness from "Mrs. Akel". Also located next to their store was the best "speed jump" in town. They probably had many chuckles as they watched the smiles on little ones as parents hit the gas and gave them a thrill. Vera was blessed and honored to see her children mature and become business professionals, in the field of medicine and academics. She was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church. After Abe's passing in 2001, Vera moved to Harrison to be near her children. On Tuesday, February 21, 2012, she passed away at the Bristol Point Rehab Center in Harrison. May loved ones find comfort in the memories of her life and knowing that now she is at rest beside her beloved husband. Vera is survived by Son, Dr. Abe Akel, Jr. and wife Shelby of Harrison Daughter, Mary Jane Akel of Harrison Five Grandchildre: Larkin Akel, Michael (Kim) Akel, Bill Rogers, Rebecca Heible and Shelby Rogers Five Great-Grandchildren She was preceded in death by her parents, husband in 2001 and three brothers; James, Troy and Billy Joe Caplena.
